Connecting Classrooms and Communities: GaiaXus at the mEducation Alliance Conference

We had the great fortune to attend, present, and exhibit at last week’s mEducation Alliance Symposium in Virginia. This was our fourth (!) time exhibiting, and as always, it was an amazing event — bringing together thought leaders in education from all over the world.  And watching our amazing academic collaborator Dr. Pascale Pinner give the keynote was a special treat.

For GaiaXus, this meeting is close to our collective heart for a few specific reasons.

First, it focuses on low-resource education environments, both overseas and here in the United States. The teachers who take on a hundred students in a small community and prepare them for a better life are my heroes — and supporting them is our mission.

Second, STEM education builds stronger communities, but teaching it effectively requires real tools and experiences. Experiential learning simply works better than pure classroom instruction. Unfortunately, the necessary equipment can be expensive or hard to use — especially when it wasn’t designed for education but repurposed from other fields. I’ve seen teachers struggle with thermometers and conductivity meters meant for aquarium hobbyists that simply don’t hold up in the hands of fifth graders. Good product design is more than making something work “well enough” or cheaply overseas; it’s about making it reliable, intuitive, and truly usable for students and teachers.

Lastly, education is a community effort. It brings together teachers, parents, administrators, and volunteers from all backgrounds. Especially in STEM, volunteers can contribute so much subject-matter expertise, giving students a direct window into real-world applications of what they’re learning. That message resonates deeply with us. Our platform was built for communities — especially those connected by water — where understanding and protecting natural resources becomes a shared learning goal across generations.

Overall, I had a blast. It’s a little intimidating, in the best way, to be among the giants of education who are improving the lives of tens of thousands of students globally and searching for the most effective, affordable ways to do it. I’m grateful to attend, to learn, and to support these projects — and I’m already looking forward to next year.
