Water touches everyone.

Everyone should be able to measure water quality accurately, share data with scientists and teachers and take part in a meaningful discussion on how we can improve and preserve our environment.

Our Story

In 2018, a group of friends gathered for dinner after a day kayaking on the Chesapeake Bay, reflecting on the beauty of the Bay and its vibrant wildlife. The conversation turned to a shared passion: how could they make a meaningful contribution to the many scientific and environmental efforts aimed at protecting and restoring the Bay? One simple yet powerful idea emerged: imagine if anyone could collect accurate, relevant environmental data while simply kayaking.

What if there was a tool—a sensor—that could float effortlessly behind a kayak, gathering vital environmental information? It would need to be precise enough for scientific research, yet easy to use, affordable, and durable enough to withstand the elements. But as they looked into existing solutions, they found that the available “multi-parameter sondes” were bulky, complex, and far too expensive for the everyday enthusiast or student.

That evening over dinner, the dream of creating a new kind of probe took shape—one designed specifically to provide accessible data, to help students and people of all ages engage with the science of our waterways, and to connect everyone who loves the Bay with research and restoration efforts.

From that dream, GaiaXus was born, and with it, a vision to revolutionize how we interact with and protect our environment. The journey that began with a shared love for the Chesapeake Bay now extends to educators, citizen scientists, and conservationists worldwide. Together, we are shaping a future where understanding and preserving our planet’s waters is within reach for all.
